Why is 1/3 equal to 0.333…, and three times that equals 1?

1/3 is the repeating decimal 0.333…, and three of them sum to 0.999…, which equals 1 exactly. The infinite repeat leaves no missing final sliver.

Why do wheat grains on a chessboard become frighteningly many?

One grain on the first square, two on the second, doubling each time; the 64th square alone has 2^63 grains. The total, about 1.8e19, dwarfs world harvests, showing exponential growth.

Why is pi neither an integer nor a fraction?

Lambert proved in 1761 that pi is irrational, not expressible as a fraction with non-repeating decimals. It is also transcendental, which is why squaring the circle by straightedge is impossible.

Why does a negative times a negative give a positive, intuitively?

Read the minus sign as a reversal of direction: debt is negative, cancelling a debt is income, hence positive. Or on a number line, two reversals bring you back to the positive direction.

Can you take the square root of a negative number?

Not within real numbers, since squares are never negative. But with the imaginary unit i where i²=−1, negatives get square roots, e.g. √−4=2i, opening the world of complex numbers.

How does a puzzle picture explain (a+b) squared?

把边长为a+b的大正方形分成四块:a²、b²和两个ab的长方形,加起来就是a²+2ab+b²。
A big square of side a+b splits into a², b² and two rectangles ab, totaling a²+2ab+b². Lay out the pieces and the formula appears by itself.

Why do clocks and the abacus use base 12 rather than base 10?

12 divides by 2,3,4,6, making sharing easier than 10, so an hour has 12 parts and a dozen is 12. The abacus upper bead standing for five also fits this scheme.

Why is a triangle's area base times height divided by two?

Why is any nonzero number to the power 0 equal to 1?

也可由a^m÷a^m=1且等于a^(m−m)=a^0推出。
Look at the pattern: 2^3,2^2,2^1 are 8,4,2, halving each step, so 2^0 must be 1 to keep it continuous. Or a^m÷a^m=1 equals a^(m−m)=a^0.

Why is dividing by a fraction the same as multiplying by its reciprocal?

Dividing by a number means multiplying by its reciprocal, and fractions are no exception. Dividing by 1/2 equals times 2, asking how many halves fit, which doubles the amount.

Why is the straight line between two points shortest, at a glance?

Why is 0.5 bigger than 0.25 even though it has fewer digits?

Decimals are fractions: 0.5 is one half, 0.25 is one quarter. Half is more than a quarter, so the number of digits does not decide size.

What are we really doing when we find a common denominator?
