Why is the boundary of the Mandelbrot set both beautiful and infinitely complex?
It comes from iterating z→z²+c, coloring the c values that do not escape. At any zoom the boundary reveals new self-similar detail, the signature of chaos and fractals.

How long is a coastline, and why does the answer depend on your ruler?
Richardson found finer measurements give longer coastlines because of self-similar irregularity. Mandelbrot then proposed fractals, using fractal dimension to describe such scale-dependent length.

Why does a Penrose tiling with just two rhombus shapes never repeat?
In 1974 Penrose tiled the plane with two rhombi under matching rules, producing fivefold symmetry with no translational period, a non-periodic tiling. It later inspired the discovery of quasicrystals.

Why do many seashells approximate a golden spiral?
A shell grows at a fixed ratio, scaling each turn by the same factor, forming a logarithmic spiral; near the golden ratio it approaches a golden spiral. Self-similarity keeps its shape at any size.

Why are snowflakes mostly six-sided?
Ice crystals arrange water molecules in a hexagonal lattice; hydrogen bonds fix sixfold symmetry. Each flake grows branches along those six axes, so it is naturally hexagonal.

Why do humans generally find left-right symmetry beautiful?
Bilateral symmetry signals physical integrity and health, so evolution made us read it as trustworthy. Mathematically it is reflection symmetry, and order itself feels pleasing.

Mathematically, how many symmetry types do repeating wallpaper patterns have?
Periodic plane patterns fall into just 17 wallpaper groups, exhausting all combinations of rotation, translation, reflection and glide reflection. Endless-looking designs are confined to these 17.

Why does the Koch snowflake have finite area but infinite perimeter?
Each step replaces a third of every segment with a bump, multiplying perimeter by 4/3 toward infinity, while added area forms a convergent geometric series with a finite limit. A classic fractal.

How do you get a Sierpinski triangle by repeatedly removing holes?
