Why does the Banach-Tarski paradox say a ball can be cut into finitely many pieces and reassembled into two identical balls?
The Banach-Tarski paradox uses the axiom of choice to build non-measurable point sets and exploits a free action of the 3D rotation group to split a ball into five pieces reassembled into two copies. It does not violate conservation of mass because the pieces are not ordinary volumetric objects. Banach & Tarski's 1924 paper and Wagon's book detail the construction.

Why can a Fourier series decompose a periodic function into a sum of sines and cosines?
A Fourier series exploits the orthogonality of trigonometric functions on an interval to expand a periodic function into an infinite weighted sum of sines and cosines. It lets complex periodic signals be analyzed into frequency components and underlies signal processing. Zygmund and Stein & Shakarchi's Fourier Analysis build the convergence theory.

What sequences does the Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem guarantee have a convergent subsequence?
The Bolzano-Weierstrass theorem states that every bounded sequence in Euclidean space has a convergent subsequence. It links boundedness with compactness and is a basic tool for existence of extrema and functional analysis. Rudin and Abbott present it as a pillar of analysis.

Why is the Cantor set called a perfect, nowhere-dense set, and what is its measure?
The Cantor set is built by repeatedly removing the middle third of intervals; it contains no interval, so it is nowhere dense, yet every point is a limit point, so it is perfect. Its total length is zero while it holds uncountably many points, showing subtleties of infinity. Cantor's 1883 paper and Rudin's text discuss it.

Why can a Cauchy sequence characterize the completeness of the real number system?
A Cauchy sequence is one whose terms become arbitrarily close to each other far enough along; the completeness of the reals is exactly that every Cauchy sequence converges to a real. The rationals fail this, as a rational sequence approaching the square root of 2 has no rational limit. Rudin and Apostol's Mathematical Analysis use it as an equivalent characterization of the reals.

What is the essential difference between pointwise and uniform convergence of a sequence of functions, and why does uniform convergence pass continuity on to the limit?
Under pointwise convergence the index N may be chosen separately for each point, so the speed varies across the domain. Uniform convergence demands a single N working simultaneously for every x, i.e. sup |f_n − f| → 0. Continuity then transfers through a three-term estimate: |f(x) − f(a)| ≤ ‖f − f_n‖∞ + |f_n(x) − f_n(a)| + ‖f − f_n‖∞, where the outer terms are controlled by uniform convergence and the middle one by continuity of f_n itself. Pointwise convergence lacks this uniform bound, and its limit really can be discontinuous.

The rationals are dense everywhere on the number line, so why does analysis absolutely need the real numbers — what exactly does completeness add?
Density guarantees only that a rational stands beside every gap, not that limits stay put. Watch the rationals 1, 1.4, 1.41, … creeping toward √2: the terms grow ever closer (a Cauchy sequence), yet the limit √2 lies outside ℚ, so the sequence lands nowhere in the rational world and the limit operation on which calculus rests breaks down. Completeness seals the gap: in the reals every Cauchy sequence converges and every bounded monotone sequence converges, laying the foundation of the intermediate and extreme value theorems.
