Why does the sample variance divide by n-1 instead of n when estimating the population variance?

The sample mean is itself computed from the data and pulls the data toward it, shrinking the sum of squared residuals: dividing by n yields an average below the true variance. Dividing by n-1 corrects exactly this bias, giving E[s²]=σ², an unbiased estimator. In degrees-of-freedom terms, once the sample mean is fixed, only n-1 of the n residuals can vary freely; the last is constrained. For large n the two nearly agree, but the difference matters for small samples.

How does the Bayes factor compare two models via 'the ratio of how much the data supports each'?

The Bayes factor BF₁₂ is the ratio of marginal likelihoods P(D|M₁)/P(D|M₂); above 1 the data favor M₁. It quantifies evidence strength directly, independent of prior model probabilities, but needs integration over parameter space (often via MCMC); unlike AIC/BIC it reports an 'odds multiple,' not a penalized point estimate.

Why do sums of countless unrelated random quantities always follow a normal distribution?

The central limit theorem states that as long as random variables are independent with finite variance, the standardized average of many of them is approximately standard normal — no matter what the original distribution looks like. Convolution iterated many times smooths away distribution details, leaving only the mean and variance. The standard error σ/√n follows: quadruple the sample size and the estimation error only halves. This is the mathematical basis of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.

What is standard deviation?

Standard deviation measures the typical way each value in a set departs from the mean: the differences from the mean are squared and averaged into the variance, and the square root of that is the standard deviation. The root is not a formality - it brings the units back from the squared scale to those of the original data, so the standard deviation can be compared directly with the mean while the variance cannot. Its use lies in reading spread against the mean: two groups with the same mean but very different standard deviations have means of quite different representativeness, and where the units differ, it is the ratio of standard deviation to mean that should be compared.

Every number from a ruler carries error — does the result computed from them get even more inaccurate?

Yes — errors propagate. In addition or subtraction, absolute errors add: two lengths each off by ±0.1 cm give a sum accurate to about ±0.2 cm. In multiplication or division, relative errors (error divided by value) add: 10±0.1 times 20±0.2 carries a relative error of about 1% plus 1%, roughly 2%. Knowing this keeps experiments and engineering from being fooled by seemingly precise numbers.

What is statistical power, and why does a larger sample make it easier to detect a true effect?

Statistical power is the probability of correctly rejecting a false null hypothesis, equal to 1−β (β being the Type II error rate). With a fixed effect size, larger samples and less noise separate the test-statistic distributions more, raising power—which is why experiments pre-compute the required sample size.

Why do many kinds of measurements bunch up in a bell shape?

Heights, weights, and measurement errors spread around a mean — high in the middle, low at both tails — tracing a bell-shaped curve, the normal distribution. The reason is that such values aggregate many small independent effects: by the central limit theorem, sums of many independent random quantities with finite variance are approximately normal regardless of their individual shapes. Its shape is set entirely by the mean μ and standard deviation σ, with about 68% of data within μ±σ and 95% within μ±2σ.

Why is the "3-sigma rule" commonly used as the control limit in quality inspection?

In statistical process control (Shewhart charts), sample statistics such as batch means are approximately normal by the central limit theorem, so falling beyond mean ±3σ has probability only about 0.3%. A point crossing the 3σ limit on a control chart is therefore treated as a signal of possible out-of-control process—an assignable cause to investigate, not random variation.

Why is the median often more representative of a "typical" income than the mean?

The mean treats every value equally, so a few extremely high incomes drag it upward and mask what most people earn. The median depends only on the middle value after sorting and is insensitive to outliers—more robust. That is why skewed data such as income or housing prices usually report both; a wider gap between them signals stronger skewness.

What is regression analysis?

Regression fits a calculable line to the relationship between variables: you propose how a dependent variable responds to the explanatory variables, then tune the parameters so that predictions match the observations as closely as possible overall, the standard choice being least squares, which drives the sum of the squared vertical deviations of the points to its minimum. Squaring puts heavier weight on the points that miss badly, and the price is that a few outliers can drag the whole line. What it delivers is the average change in the outcome for each unit change in the input, as when height is used to estimate weight; but it describes covariation only, it cannot prove cause, and extrapolating beyond the range the sample covers is unreliable.

Under what conditions is a maximum likelihood estimator consistent and asymptotically normal, and why is its asymptotic variance exactly the inverse of the Fisher information?

Under regularity conditions such as identifiability, parameter-independent support, a twice differentiable log-likelihood with differentiation interchangeable with expectation, sqrt(n)·(θ_mle − θ0) converges to a normal distribution with mean zero and variance I(θ0)^(-1), where I is the per-observation Fisher information. Intuitively, the Fisher information measures the average curvature of the log-likelihood near the true value: the sharper the peak, the more strongly the data pin down the parameter. This is why estimators attaining that variance are called asymptotically efficient.

Confronted with p=0.03, many people read it as a 97% chance that the null hypothesis is false. At which step does that reading break down, and what object does a p-value actually measure?

By definition, a p-value is the probability, calculated assuming the null hypothesis holds, of obtaining results at least as extreme as those observed: P(data this extreme | H0 true) — a statement about the data, never about the hypothesis. Misreading it as P(H0 false | data) reverses the direction of conditioning and silently imports the prior plausibility of the competing hypotheses, the statistical face of the prosecutor's fallacy. One and the same p = 0.03 supports wildly different conclusions under different priors and sample sizes, and the American Statistical Association's 2016 formal statement accordingly forbids interpreting a p-value as the probability that the null hypothesis is true or false.

Why does one-way ANOVA construct its F statistic as the ratio of the between-group mean square to the within-group mean square, rather than running a t-test on every pair of groups?

ANOVA partitions total variability into a between-group part, which reflects treatment effects, and a within-group part, which reflects random error. Under the null hypothesis of equal group means, both mean squares estimate the same error variance, so their ratio follows an F distribution; if a treatment genuinely works, the between-group term inflates and F grows. Pairwise t-tests across k groups require k(k-1)/2 comparisons, and even at level 0.05 apiece the family-wise Type I error rate balloons. A single F test controls that overall rate while estimating error variance from all residuals at once.

In a randomized block design, why does grouping experimental units by a known nuisance source improve the precision of treatment comparisons, and when does the design fare worse than a completely randomized one of equal size?

Nuisance sources such as plots, batches, or testing days are divided into internally homogeneous blocks, and treatments are randomized within each block, so every treatment comparison happens inside a block while block-to-block variation is stripped out of the error term. The error sum of squares shrinks accordingly, standard errors of treatment means fall, and tests gain power. The cost is b−1 fewer error degrees of freedom than a completely randomized design of equal size; the trade pays off only when genuine block differences clearly exceed within-block noise.
