Why do we record time with numbers?

Writing time as numbers lets clocks everywhere speak the same language, so meetings do not get mixed up. Numbers cut flowing time into comparable little boxes.

Why does a leap year add an extra day?

Earth's trip around the Sun actually takes a bit more than 365 days. Every four years we add the missing day to February, making a leap year.

Why is there day and night in one day?

Earth spins once, and the side facing the Sun has day while the opposite side has night. One full spin is about one day.

How do we measure very far distances?

For far roads we use bigger units like the kilometer, equal to 1000 meters. Satellites can even use the travel time of light or signals to measure the distance to the Moon.

Why does a year have 12 months?

Long ago people saw the Moon grow full about 12 times, close to one trip of Earth around the Sun. So they split the year into 12 months.

Why does a year have four seasons?

Earth orbits the Sun while tilted a bit. The tilt makes sunlight stronger or weaker through the year, creating spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Why do we look at clocks?

A clock tells us what time of day it is, so we can plan eating, sleeping and playing. Without clocks, it would be hard to meet and do things together.

Why is an hour split into 60 minutes?

Ancient Babylonians liked the number 60 because it divides evenly by many numbers, making splits easy. The habit stayed on our clocks to this day.

How do we find out how long something is?

We take a fixed small unit, like a centimeter or a ruler, and compare it along the thing. Counting how many units fit tells us its length.

Why do we need a calendar?

A calendar lays out days, months and years in one big table, helping us remember holidays and meetings. Without it, we would easily forget important dates.

Why does a week have 7 days?

Many old cultures stopped at 7 because they saw seven moving lights in the sky: the Sun, the Moon and five bright planets. That is how the 7-day week began.
